The US$57 billion Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO) is ramping up its allocation to actively managed public credit markets with a US$1 billion allocation to two global credit managers, it announced today – a move that Global SWF expects to see across the state-owned investor universe.

CalSTRS is the world’s largest educator-only pension fund, and the world’s second largest state PPF, only behind its stablemate CalPERS. For the fiscal year 2020-21 the educator-only fund scored an impressive 27.2% return, which will improve its funding ratio by 300 bp. The Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO) achieved a 5.4% net return in 2020, boosted by strong returns in private equity (+34.2%) and global credit (+11.1%) and meeting its return benchmark index. Its AUM grow to C$73.3 billion (US$58.2 billion), from C$70.3 billion.

Saudi Arabia’s US$400 billion Public Investment Fund became the latest sovereign investor to enter the growing market for direct lending by becoming an anchor investor in a shariah credit fund.
