The Bank of England is the world's second oldest Central Bank, established in 1694 a few decades after Sweden's Sveriges Riksbank. It has been a role model on which most modern central banks have been based. The bank is custodian to the official gold reserves of the United Kingdom, and those of around 30 other countries.
